"If you are pro-equality, anti-prejudice, and are appalled by the fact that a Winter-Olympic holding nation (Russia) are treating their LGBT community so horrifically, then this is an event you want to get involved with. Let’s be Too Gay For Putin and follow us too on @toogayforputin
Now, let me explain.
It’s rare that I get particularly vocal about LGBT issues. I tend to be a quiet watcher who’ll chip in with a thought or 2 when I feel it’s relevant, but the stuff currently going on in Russia has really appalled me. I’m sure almost everyone knows about all the new legislation they’re bringing in, so I won’t spell it all out to you.
I also suspect you may well have heard about Stephen Fry’s attempts to get the Winter Olympics of Sochi moved/boycotted etc. but on the off-chance that you haven’t, here’s a link to explain http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-23645141
The support for this is strong, but clearly no-one in Government has the slightest inclination to pay attention and try to anything about it, but I’m not interested in that.
The final straw for me was the interview given by world champion Russian pole vaulter Yelena Insinbayeva, who defended the introduction of the new legislation, as well as condemning athletes at the current world championships who have shown solidarity with the community by, for instance, painting their nails in the colour of the rainbow.
I will, as a result of all of this, be refusing to watch a single second of the coverage of Sochi 2014.
Here’s what I’m going do instead – anything that would be Too Gay For Putin. I’m not talking about copious amounts of same-sex fornication, I’m talking stuff that anyone could do, of any sexuality, from any background. So far people are baking cakes and selling them to raise awareness, hand-holding on mass through their towns and cities, even organising a concert made up entirely of music written by gay composers. If it's peaceful, positive, spreads awareness, and is #TooGayForPutin - then it's great :)
I’m not asking anyone else to boycott the games altogether, though I think it’d be fantastic if you did, but just doing a few small things that would really piss off Putin and the rest of the bigoted percentage of the Russian population would be fun, and if we got enough of us, I think would really make a point that this is ridiculous in 2013. Pictures of said things would be great.
I’m not going to judge anyone who doesn’t want to support this, because being anti-prejudice is what this is all about, but I really hope that you’ll want to make this a goer.
If you’re in, PLEASE share this with anyone else that you think might want to join in with this. Also, if you have any ideas of things that might be too gay for Putin, however small or silly, please post them here, as they might give an idea to someone who wants to join in, but is running a bit short of inspiration.
Cheers guys,
Z"
